Here's the warning statement for Hawaii. I think the key thing for those in harm's way to know is that a tsunami isn't like a regular wave. It's a surging increase in sea level that lasts for 5 to 15 minutes, followed by a recession of the water level, and it can go on like that for hours. Our daughter lives in Kailua, Oahu, across the road from the beach. She's evacuated to higher ground.

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH

According to a report on the BBC the wave is expected to arrive within the hour at Hawaii.

Definitely safer at sea, if you are in 600 feet or more then you will be safe

A tsunami is not dangerous in deep water away from the shore.

YES- absolutely safer in open water than near shore (shallow water).

If the yacht is far out to sea, the crew might not even notice the tsunami.

Twenty minutes after the time of arrival on Oahu, radio reports from the island are describing the tsunami event as a "subtle rise in water level", and a "surging in and out along the shore" as the leading edge passed through the islands. No damage or other issues at this point.

If you can get to it, take your boat to sea. Have someone drop you off at the Marina or leave your car in the parking structure at LAX and take a cab to the marina if possible. A car left at the Marina might itself be destroyed. Get into the deepest water you can reach.

Well, what the heck, even though the network news shows are forecasting hellfire and damnation for teh West Coast this morning; I think I'll still take my flight out to see what's left of Seattle and Whidbey Island tomorrow.
