I guess you missed the part even in the OP's first post that they were found and are ok.

Bad time to be going out if you didn't know what you were doing - blowing 25+ knots and swells running about 2 meters.

Good thing they've been found - boat looked like a POS.
Been in and out of that marina many times and the shallow reef is on the port side going out. Unless they meant to hog the whole channel, they should have been on the starboard side which is plenty deep. The only time that reef should come into play is heading in - not out. Clearly these people had no clue as to what they were doing. They are lucky they didn't actually make it to the Molokai Channel where things can get really interesting. Their route should have taken them east around Diamond Head and across the Molokai Channel between Oahu and Molokai and then on to Lahaina. Based on the reports, they were no where near this route.

Officials said the ship should have made it to Maui by Monday, but it is now completely motorless and the mast is broken.
Clearly they needed a 3-masted sailboat, since the 2 they started with didn't hold up.

I believe I have a picture of me surfing that reef with an inbound schooner in the "channel" behind me taken in 1969.

Here's one of a sailboat surfing that channel last summer with a BIG South swell. SCARY!!

Yep, you can see the surfers in the break next to the boat. As always, the tonnage rule applies to drop ins.

The crew was rescued on June 10. The SS Chuckahui Kai is now adrift.

These folks are extremely lucky! The direction they were heading the next stop would have been East Kiribati about 7 days away. But the probability of them hitting Kiribati would virtually be zero considering they couldn't even stay in sight of land between Honolulu and Maui.

Too bad, someone competent could have done something with that boat.
