Grenada vs. Trinidad for Hurricane Season?

Hi there,

I got a lot of scuttlebutt which is the better place to stay for one or two months during Hurricane season, Grenada or Trinidad. Our plan is to stay on the boat, work on minor updates and repairs and finally get a new antifoul. The boat should stay in the water since some of our system will not work on land. So a nice, cheap Marina would be preferred over a rolly anchorage. Any ideas, recommendations - any tip is highly appreciated.

I'm here in Trini, on the hard; so I'd have to say for boatyard, chandleries, contractors, etc., I prefer Chaguaramas. If I was staying out on a bouy here though, I'd rather cut my throat for many reasons, including swells, gross water, safety from fast, brainless fishermen, hourly diesel spills, debris and dead fish. I hear that the docks at Coral Cove and at Cruise Inn are nice, with swimming pools for the end of the day wind-down. However, I don't have the money for docks.

The customs and immigration people and rules will have you rolling your eyes as well. Still, on the hard, concentrated effort, this place has all the stuff within walking distance. Also within walking distance are a lot of options for eating and drinking, at outrageously low prices.

The bay at Hog Island in southern Grenada is a nice spot to anchor, but unfortunately fairly far from the chandleries and marine services. There was a really friendly group of cruisers and semi-permanent liveaboards anchored there when we visited a few years ago. A fellow named John from Sea Witch dinghied over to welcome us before we'd even finished getting the anchor set.

There was a nice sense of community with twice weekly get togethers at Roger's little bar shack on the beach. Most everyone would dinghy over to Lower Woburn on Friday nights and pile into a mini-bus to go to De Big Fish restaurant. This was a few years ago, so I'm sure the cast of characters has changed, but it would be worth checking out if you decide on Grenada.

The bay is very well protected from wind and swells. If you have a lot of work to do on your boat, you might want to get that done somewhere else, then come over to Hog Island.

p.s. we owned IP 380 hull 88. Loved that boat!
