Well, maybe consider they weren't allowed to do their jobs for the past decade.

So, unlike a professional well disciplined force, they are just over compensating and running wild, now that they have official encouragement?

I've entered dozens of countries in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and I've never seen officials so arbitrary and arrogant as those at the Bradley Terminal at LAX or at JFK in NYC. And I am an American citizen returning home...... They must screen those puffed up little tyrants to eliminate every last shred of courtesy and humanity before they let them man a kiosk in the immigration hall.

They can now ask you give up your phone, iPads, laptops etc along with passwords for inspection of all your personal, financial and business records. They can also make copies of everything for use later. This applies to US citizens, I assume entering foreigners have even less privacy.

Uhhhh, WHAT????!!!! As a citizen of the US, I've been treated like a terrorist by my own country's Customs & Border Patrol agents more times than I remember. And that is with extra clearance from the FBI that I needed for traveling while working for 20 years. So, yea, I kinda agree with Boatman. A lot, but not all of them, are power hungry dicks. BTW, I cruise to Canada every year, and their CBP are pleasant and treat me well every time I go. We're not all the enemy...

Re: Cruising the Caribbean

Madwand,

We've returned to the US for visits quite a few times over the years. Sometimes the Homeland Security have behaved in a dignified, professional way, and sometimes not. I'm not giving details, but it was exceedingly unpleasant for this returning US citizen in good standing. I can imagine easily that Boatman 61 was poorly treated.

As I said, maybe if they'd been doing their jobs, they wouldn't have been screwing with you, I don't know. There's no telling what they're up to since the Patriot Act and the last upside down decade of kissing dictators asses and apologizing to the world for not being Muslim. You can't expect anything to ever be normal again.

Madwand.. that particular incident was NYC 2003.. first ever visit to the States
I've since taken to flying into New Jersey if I have to go to the North..
Miami/Palm Beach is friendlier but then they likely have to be for Disneyworld..

Well, that was just 2 years after the Patriot Act. Fun times there when you give up your rights to the government under the guise of security. It's only gonna get worse.

As for the questioning.. was sent to an office where two FAT black officers were munching MacDonalds.. had to stand there for 10-15 minutes till they'd finished whereupon they grilled me about why I was there.. checked me for 'illegal cash' as I said I'd come to buy a boat.. turned over my luggage then told me to get out in 90days as they love to deport folks like me.
Would not have minded but I was better groomed than they were..
We have been in and out maybe 40 countries give or take a few and the USA guys are the absolute worse - treated us a criminals - and all we did was go in to check in - have absolutely no respect for them but need to treat them nice as they can actually arrest us for who knows what - don't trust them at all

So you got your feelings hurt. Still got all your legs?

Were you treated like American criminals or Soviet criminals?

Criminal???!!! Criminal is CBP behavior to it's own citizens, who are coming back into their OWN country legally. Just curious how much international traveling you do with your staunch defense of their behavior. Perhaps if you had more experience with our "pleasant" officers, you might see it differently. We're not all the enemy...

Re: Cruising the Caribbean

When did i defend their behavior? I suggested reasons. I work next to government lackeys every day, and as much as they are half illiterate and sometimes rude, I don't see them treating people like criminals. I see them following the senseless bureaucratic orders they are given, but there is no evidence anyone was treated badly other than a string of America-bashing posts from people from open border countries. The times I've come back, I was asked if I had anything to declare and moved right along. So it's possible some people were treated badly, and it's also quite possible some were overly sensitive.
