What's your intended use?

If you want high speed Internet then as posted, that's big bucks, both in terms of upfront cost and service.

If you just want weather updates and basic comm to shore then that can be done much less expensively.

Mobile to cancun

Look into Globalstar 1700 sat phone, XGate and an Optimizer. You can get a limited data plan. Will cost you some money, but not exorbitant. Your life is more valuable than what you will spend for this. You can connect through this at 38,000 baud. Slow, but good enough for grib files and checking out forecasts. Gribs will download to InavX and give you simulated 3 hour looks. With that and Sailflow, you can keep up with changes. You are in hurricane season and you must keep up with the weather or you could get caught in one. They spawn in that area sometimes. I used it and it works. Takes some time, but when cruising, that's all you have is time.

You can also have someone on land watch out for you and call them on the Globalstar.

Get Sailflow Pro and start studying weather now. If you have an IPad, get INavX. Both are pretty good I have found, but no forecast is good for a week.

Yes, well into hurricane season hurricanes can pop you almost instantly just N of Honduras. They tend to track NW from there and make land fall along the NE Yucatan. Watch Sybil if charts for a tropical wave intersecting low...that's the formula for instant tropical weather in the NW Carib.

That should read "Synoptic charts" not "Sybil if " charts.

Re: Mobile to cancun

Does anyone know if XM weather works out in the Gulf. I am getting closer to leaving. Departure date is 9-25. I bought liferaft, epirb, and rented a sat phone today.
