1970 Ohlson 38 - serious cruiser or one or two

The Romany Star is for sale

1970 Ohlson 38 Hull 114 laid up by Tyler in England under Lloyds supervision and finished in the Ohlson yard in Sweden.

Romany Star is a fully prepared and fitted-out ocean cruising boat. She has been the love of my life for 28 years, and at every opportunity I have used the highest quality supplies and workmanship I could find. The cabin is completely customized for two people to cruise comfortably and safely anywhere in the world, and to sleep a guest or two at anchor. The compact galley is set up for foodies, with space for every ingredient and tool you could want and a way to hold it still at sea. Storage space has been maximized to carry six months of food, and a truly huge array of spare parts and supplies. All interior and exterior lights are LED, many of them dual color for night vision, and there is a slide-mounted flat-screen monitor for movie night. All varnished wood is bright and beautiful, and the cockpit teak is grey, soft and non-skid as it naturally should be. Quality-of-life details like fans and cupholders making living aboard a joy.

Every system on the boat is designed for safety and comfort while ocean voyaging. The anchor is big enough for tropical storms, with reinforced cleats to take the load. There are reinforced chain plates for a drogue on the stern. I built the hard dodger strong enough to dance on, and the windvane steering and electric tiller pilot controls are led forward to the dodger to keep the watch dry. I built a custom padded curved watch seat for the companionway. The decks are surfaced in Treadmaster for maximum grip at sea, with hardware for jacklines and an upper lifeline. Every locker and drawer has an effective sea lock so everything holds safely still even in a potential knockdown. I built handholds throughout the boat. There are well-engineered shade and weather awnings for all weather conditions to encourage daily use of the large cockpit, and extra large drains to keep it empty. I have constantly added and tweaked designs to make this a perfect offshore boat for a couple or solo sailor. This boat is ready to continue her cruising life to distant shores with the next loving owner.

Re: 1970 Ohlson 38 - serious cruiser or one or two

I guess so. It has been a tough time between having a cruising partner leave and Covid I've been still for far to long. I have learned from NZ Customs that the duty would be quite a bit so an offshore purchase would be best. She is here duty free until June 2021.

These are really well built boats that sail well to boot. Not big 38's but they will take you anywhere "IF" they have been well looked after and maintained and priced right they make a good choice for a couple looking for an all arounder.

Still in New Zealand, price is firm. Customs has extended the duty free through June 2022.
