Sailing around the world how old is a good age?

In approximately 3 years I want to sail around the world. In 3 years I will be turning 18. I have sailing experience just not really open water. My two best friends are coming with me and my dad is supporting me and believes In me, am I crazy to be attempting this?

At your age, of course you can do it. It is more a test of your resources and will power than anything else.

The question shows you're not ready yet. Start taking short overnight trips to nearby anchorages, then slowly build up to at least a 4 or 5 day offshore trip where you're out of sight of land. Go sailing when the weather is rough. Learn how to reef, heave to, and other heavy weather tactics. Service the head. Climb the mast to everything up top. Wear sunscreen. Anchor a hundred times, all over. When you and the boat are ready, you'll know.

I agree with Richard. If your not sure that you are in your right mind about it, then not yet ready for prime time. I'm sure your familiar with Laura Dekker, and her commitment was absolute, to the point she was willing to do battle with her government to allow her to go.

Take those overnight trips and see how that fits. Do you have the boat now that you plan to use? What kind of boat would you consider?

I think eighteen is a great age to sail around the world. Stay focused on your goal and don't let yourself get distracted. I grew up sailing since I was a little kid but when I was 18 I went and lived in the arctic because that was my thing at the time. The experience rocked my world and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

There is no "best age" only evolving perspectives.
At present age 15....keep your options open but your dreams intact.

We have several boats were looking at including a Pearson 367 and a Catalina 32. Were planning on taking several short trips to Martha's Vineyard, block island, and then we want to take a trip down the east coast and possibly the Bahamas
