Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

I am reading about "ini" files for Windows versions, but I am not seeing any Ini files other than CrashReport.Ini.

Where do adjust the cache levels?

One point - I don't use "beta" versions, rathwer preferring to be on the cutting edge as opposed to the bleeding edge..... Tony
How are you finding chart access outside the US?

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

jwcolby54, if you can't use multiple windows on your win 8.1 system you have is set up wrong. Take a few minutes and RTFM. You will be much happier.

I am running Win 10 on this little netbook I have. My new desktop is back to the builder for service. I may keep that one on Win 7, not sure yet. Win 10 is okay. It is much the same as 8.1 but improved, IMO. I have been running it for 5 or 6 months and of course it went through many iterations. This last update before release is pretty nice. Seems to be solid although I don't use it a lot but has never crashed on me, even the early versions. All my applications and the new apps are running okay.

ROTFL. Listen, I use my computer to get work done, not surf the internet. I am a programmer / analyst. When Windows 8 came out it completely broke the way that windows always worked. If you have used both you know that. I was in a work environment, at IBM trying to do work... and bam, EVERYTHING changed. I couldn't find anything, I couldn't click the close x to close things (it didn't exist), I couldn't minimize stuff (it didn't exist), I couldn't get a status bar at the bottom(it didn't exist). NOTHING was the same.

So please don't do the "RTFM" with me. I had a system that simply REFUSED to window stuff and KEEP it windowed. I had two monitors and it insisted on using one ENTIRE DAMNED SCREEN to do one tiny little part of Lotus crap that IBM insisted on using. A start screen that I kept ending up on anytime I did anything, full of blinking things that I had no use for.

So I am doing work, not spending my life reading the manual.

I understand that a couple of years later, MS decided to relent and give us "customers" back full windowing of all apps, and a god awful start menu full of icons (oh joy).

RTFM my ass!

And oh by the way, I really am happy you like it.

Edit: I didn't have Windows 8.1, I had 8.0 as it came out of MS. And it sucked! At that time that calculator would have either been FULL SCREEN or it would have been a third of the screen, top to bottom. Did I happen to mention it SUCKED?

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

Well I had 8.0 as well and hated it. I went on a road trip and its all I had. I learned how to use it and by the time I got home I was okay with it. Did I say I liked it? I still prefer Windows 7 but that is not the way the world is going. I have Win 7 on my brand new desktop, the one that is in the shop getting serviced.

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

I spent 3 months trying to use it but I did so while trying to get work done and it was an exercise in frustration.

The thing to understand is that I killed my main machine (unintentionally of course) and so had to get a new laptop. They ALL were then shipping with Windows 8.0 so I said "what the heck" let's try it. I ended up buying Windows 7 Pro from Newegg along with a SSD and changing the drive and OS at the same time. After a week of chasing down drivers I had it all working, even the touch screen.

You are of course correct, we have no choice but to move on eventually. And from what I have heard the latest version has undone much of the damage caused by the original 8.0. It did so so late however that MS decided to skip a version to try and convince the world that 10.0 was not simply 8.x with a new name. However it is (mostly) just Win 8x with a new name. And an installment plan of course. Another "wave of the future".

So yea, I will eventually get with the program. I will NEVER just upgrade my main work machine without being well adapted. Learned my lesson there.

To be fair I do not really know what I am doing yet but just trying to change from one map to another scanning up and down the coast, it could take 20-30 seconds before it decided to load the next map.

Worse, it will only load a single area, leaving adjacent squares blank.

I probably need to spend copious time playing to learn how things work.
For raster charts, enable opengl, then in the opengl settings, enable texture compression with caching, then rebuild the texture cache (takes a while) and the performance should be good.

For vector charts, try compiling the latest git from source (not in the latest beta) it's a lot faster ingesting ENC. In the future will probably be 20x faster than it is now.

Nope, windows as well. However, most users cannot compile from source, (or even know what that is!!) Those that can will understand BA's advice!
You can, however do the openGL part - click on the spanner (wrench for those of you from the USA!), then under display, then Graphics, Options. You will see what BA is talking about there! :-)

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

I've just installed openCPN and am at the screen
that says "add a directory" Haven't got a clue
what to do at this point. Do I need to read all
2000 posts here to find out?

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

Hi Bill,
It's asking you to give it your chart directory - ie where are your charts located.
If you don't have any yet, just go next....

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

I did go "next" (actually, "apply") and the instructions say "Now
you can start using your charts"

How do I get charts? Do I need one of those
"plug-ins"?

Re: Free PC Navigation Software - OpenCpn

Nope. Unless you have an unusual format. Read the page on the website about charts;
Chart Sources | Official OpenCPN Homepage
