Have you found the LTH's to be good batteries?

Yeah, but do you trust it less than the news media or online marketing or CF posts (Mainsail excepted)??

So what is then?

Brittanica isn't any better.

If anything it just highlights the western myth of "objective truth"

Leyden jars were capacitors, and as capacitors do discharge at once no wonder he called it a battery.
As most know there's a bit of difference between battery and capasitor.

Re: Your favorite house battery?

Information for newbies:

Serial and Parallel Battery Configurations and Information

Homing in:
serial:
a cell is always 2V a 12V battery consists of 6 cells
the cells are serialized if one cell has 50Ah the battery has 50Ah

if u use 6 x 2V seperate units and serialize them you always know if one unit is faulty as the output drops. i.e. 6x2V one is faulty = 10V output.
well it is not as simple but you have a chance to replace one cell-unit without any damage to the other cells.

Minus: EXPENSIVE
Plus: Batteries should last fm 12-16 years and more

parallel:
common 12V Batteries in Banks like:
4x12Vx225Ah = 900Ah nominal

Main Problem:
they will always have a different voltage.
if connected they always charge/discharge each other
solution: cyrix-ct on the charging side (partly)
battery combiners(some sort of schottky-diodes) on the load
A system should be implemented to recharge at 12,5V up to 13,8V to
minimize charging intervals.

Minus:
to know if a battery is faulty u hve to disconnect it from the bank to check it
Plus: cheap

Problem for serial and parallel
say nominal is 675Ah u have only about 20% u can actually use from 13,8 down to 12,5V that is 135Ah at max. expect 120Ah.

Thank you all for corrections and comments.
Think this points to the basics and can help a lot of us understanding the problem

Not sure what you mean by this one. Yes 12.5v is only 20% DOD but you can safely bring them down to 12.1 or 12.2 for a 50% DOD and get 337ah.

Is there a reason you are saying batteries connected in series/parallel shouldn't be brought below 12.5

Re: Your favorite house battery?

yes I know about the 12,1V statement but I have heard 12,5V to be on the save side too. Unfortionatly do not know where

Re: Your favorite house battery?

Drawing down on a battery too far can damage it... Old variety lead acid's can only draw down a little, AGM's more, and Lithiums the most... I believe Lithium battery's can draw down as much as 50% without causing damage to the cells.
The main problem with a damaged cell in a battery, or battery in a bank is that all other batteries in the bank will only recharge to the level of the damaged one.
Batteries are like children, you gotta look after them.

Sorry but I have to dispell several untruths here.
FLA and AGM batteries are just fine with a 50% dod with an occasional dod further than that
Lifepo4 batteries are fine with a regular dod of 80% ie 80% of charge used. With no negative effects.

Re: Your favorite house battery?

While the topic is wandering, let me throw in that some time ago I came across a reference on CALB's web site, indicating no cells over 100A capacity should be used for marine (boat) installations, as their cells were not robust enough to be used in the constantly moving marine environment. One more reason that series-parallel configurations sometimes simply must be used and accommodated. Along with "Honey, did you leave the fork lift in the quarterberth again? I need to move these batteries and I can't find it."
