Excessive Voltage message

Hi I've had two pieces of equipment fail just recently, a Stealth fan less PC and a "Radio Ocean" vhf. The pc just went completely dead and the vhf died last night saying "Excessive voltage!!" I tested the voltage right then and a couple of times later at 13.8v! Now both of these bits of gear have lived a full life so it might be coincidence but before I buy anything new how can I check that there is not some hidden issue?

sounds to me that you did check

but maybe you need to check the voltage during all phases of battery charging

have you done an equalization and left things turned on?

If you have a Victron battery monitor, it will save the highest voltage seen as one of its history values. Other monitors may also.

Yes I checked it while the error message was flashing and a few other times. No equalization ever done since we got the boat 6 months ago.

13.8 is normal charging voltage for a lead acid battery, so that sounds normal there, it is only when things go over 15V that you should have problems.

Yep that's what I think, 13.8 should be fine. I like the idea of the Victron to check for peaks, I will get one before investing in a new VHF. I guess it's just coincidence two failed in the same week. I did read somewhere about AC riple through as faulty charger being a problem but that's out of my ability
