While I haven't experienced this on a boat, I have diagnosed a car fire for an insurance claim that was caused by an ashtray light + being grounded during a radio install.
The installer replaced the 10amp fuse with a 30amp fuse. According to the owner, the dash lights worked fine for about 4 hours... before the fire.

Anyway, the original fuse worked as it was supposed to, and you're right, accidental groundings do happen.

You may find that the ABYC requires a minimum 2" spacing between the battery and the fuse and does not permit installations on the battery terminals themselves.
Please provide the ABYC Section in E-11 that specifies a 2" minimum and prohibits MRBF fuses on the terminals themselves. I can't find it.

Re: Everything to bus bars?

According to Blue Sea Systems http://assets.bluesea.com/files/reso...YCexcerpts.pdf

“The ABYC requirement is for a battery bank fuse is to be within 7 wire inches of the battery bank. The European ISO/RCD (which is law) requires the fuse be within 200mm. 200mm equates to about 7.9”.

Mounting placement dimensions for a fuse or circuit breaker (7"/40"/72" ABYC rule): 7 inch maximum if the conductor is not housed in a sheath or enclosure in addition to the wire insulation, 40 inch maximum if the conductor is housed in a sheath or enclosure in addition to the wire insulation, 72 inch maximum if the conductor is connected directly to the battery and housed in a sheath or enclosure in addition to the wire insulation.
