General Info: Polar Diagrams

Hi all,

I've been trying to find polars for the 380, 400, 410, 420, 421 and the 440 but so far I've only found the 440. (http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/1554/p440de8.gif, also mentioned in this forum in another thread)

We've been considering buying a Lagoon for some time now and have rented a few of them but polars would be VERY interesting for us to see before we make the final descision on which model we want, (Of course there are MANY other parameters: price, space, etc, etc, but polars would also be great to have!)

Would be great if we can collect links to polars here.

Inofficial, self-made polars are also very much welcome.

“PolarDesigner” is a Velocity Prediction Program, (VPP), that allows you to do direct calculations on your sailboat’s performance, i.e. creating your own polar.

Polars? For cruising? Polar charts are handy for squeezing that last quarter knot out of a fully crewed racing boat...helping to determine when to do a spinnaker peel for example...and not much else.

If you still want polars, make sure they are computed at fully loaded cruising weight, not at design racing weight. There will be a huge difference.

Well, the reason for me looking for the polars is that the (objective) polars are a clear indication of a boats performance. I consider a quick boat a secure boat. When cruising I'd like to be able to outrun bad weather and the quicker the boat the better I can do that. So, polars are an important parameter when buying a cruising cat also. I have e.g. sailed the 420 and found it terribly slow. The 410 and the 400 I felt was much quicker and could go closer to the wind but having polars it would be easier to compare more objective than my feeling from chartering them for a week or two...

I've asked the local Lagoon agent but no luck there... I guess he did not have them and could not get them from Lagoon either.

Janoz--For what it's worth, attached (I hope, I can't see it) are polar diagrams for a Lagoon 400. I'm pretty sure they are for a standard main (not flat top) and genoa. Honestly, I can't seem to figure them out, and I know how to read polars...Bill

Thanks. I use this now as benchmark. I dont have square top. In my first larger passage, I have practised windward sail and can confidently sail now 6 kn speed at 50 deg true in 15 kn wind, surpassing polar diagram for 1 kn in not too bad seas.

Took me a while to figure out though. I think flat seas performance is purely academic as real sea never like that.

I have created the attached polar for our Lagoon 450 based initially on the L440 and then on experience of over 6000nm. Light blue is main plus jib, green is gennaker and yellow Wingaker spinnaker, red is reefed with jib. It is made to be used with PredictWind or another similar route programme. I believe it fairy realistic and typically we can sail at half the wind strength up to 20kts.

I don't believe the L450 will sail above 10kts unless either pushed hard - over canvassed - or surfing down a wave (yep we have done 23kts)

Hi Do you still have the excel file with the polars for L450? We are going to rent a Lagoon 42 in Kroatia this summer and I think I may reduce your figures some percent an then I can use for planning the crusing. In advance thanks.

Lagoon 380, although in 20 knots and more, I go faster and higher. Besides 380, also the 52 and 620 are standards in Predictwind
