Since I got a spot in ARC+ I figured this was the ideal delivery. And on the way I would expand my sailing experience.

Let's not forget to emphasis the word "HOPE." It also happens to be my favorite engineering terms.

I agree, but if we all thought that way then we would never leave our houses or drive cars, heck send kids to school. HOPE thats a big word... You can even add that word to playing golf. HOPE you dont get struck by lightening, hhhmmmm HOPE you dont get bent diving. LIFE IS ALL ABOUT TIME AND CHANCE. You can have the most equipped boat in the world and never make it across the alantic. Boats can handle way more then we can, and with experienced crew and a good capt she will make it.... Cheers

In my experience, it is a major project to prepare a boat for a crossing. I say this because I do. Many non-sailing owners grossly underestimate the required time / know-how / budget / and skill level.

I think it is less time if the boat is new as then it is only correcting things and this crossing may be the possibly easiest one to do (especially beyond CV).

With an older boat, it can be that more time is required for preparation and fit-out - many things require not only checking up thoroughly but often replacement, and replacing things is always very slow, especially if you are replacing them while in Canary Islands ...

So, in my book, a boat with recent crossings is not a credit but a liability (time/work/money wise).

Having other people onboard only really helps if they are good at what they do. Some captains are very good at deliveries. Others are very good at repairs and maintenance. Some are good at both, and a few - at none.

Beyond CV it may be an easy, if at times slow, ride. Plenty of time to learn. If things get wrong, you will just sit things out and drift some and one day next year you too will drift to the West Indies.

Make sure, if you want to learn things, the person you chose as your skipper-tutor has not only adequate sailing skills but also some teaching experience. Some very good sailors make very poor tutors.

So, my two eurocents of insight. Enjoy the ride, fair winds.

All I can say is that two years of planning and preparation went into, when purchased, an almost new well equipped stout yacht. Even though we did not encounter severe weather in two crossings of the Atlantic we side-stepped four major low pressures on the northern route. That process put us nearly 1000 miles off course. The highest winds encountered were not much more than 40 knots and we frankly enjoyed the weather. A yacht three days behind us was hove to for 12 hours and sustained minor damage. Another yacht to the north off Ireland sustained more substantial damage. They had been around the world, via Cape Horn, and said that one was the worst they have ever seen. This was in July month.

My point is on that trip, in the middle of the Atlantic, made me appreciate a little extra peace of mind that a careful preparation and complete knowledge of your boat can allow. Imagine having to look for a through hull in the middle of the sh**t in three feet of water because you didn't have time to locate and inspect them before leaving

And consider the number of yachts missing in the Atlantic this year, 2 or 3 I think, not counting the Nina. Boats get in trouble and those folks will not be writing on CF about their experiences in heavy weather and telling everyone to go for it.

Agree, it is all about risk/reward. Let's look at this years numbers. Take the number of missing yachts and divide by the number of Atlantic crossings for this year. Assuming no incidents for the remainder of the year and call it 2 missing and 400 to 800 Atlantic crossings. The number is 1 out of 200 to 400 boats doing an Atlantic crossings disappear. That is not a big number but is a HUGE number for risk and we are not counting the ones whose yachts sank and they were rescued. Admittedly, the Canaries to Caribbean is not bad so the risk is probably lower.

Frankly I wish Wendi only the best, fair winds and calm seas.

Why else would a mass event like ARC be set up exactly there, exactly at this time of the year? ARC skippers' skills vary from great to none. I think over 99.9% make it to the other side.

Off course we both see the relativity of what is 'easy' or not.

Nicely illustrated. THere are cautious people who take things very slow, and adventurers who choose their adventure then figure out what they need to make it happen. I am feeling good about this and if all goes well this week in Spain I will even have reached the starting point of owning my boat.
Then it is one bite at a time. It will all work out. THere are some really great people who have been sending me PMs and giving me great wisdom and good planning advice.

I can do this. No time like the present.

99.9% , just need to hope to be in that 99.9 part. Are those the real odds?

Every year there are yachts that return to the Canaries or divert to the Cape Verde Islands with problems. I don't know of any that went missing in the ARC.
