Crew Wanted: exploring south coast of Newfoundland

crew wanted from Prince Edward Island to the south coast of Newfoundland and then exploring the fjords on this coast with no road access and only a few outports.

It would probably help a lot if you advise what type of boat you'll be using, the length of the trip, any compensation or cost.

Boat is a 44 foot wooden ketch. Leaving soon expect trip to be one to two months. Boat has a diesel stove. No compensation but no expenses on the boat. Boat has a dive compressor that will take two divers to 60 feet.

What is your experience to go sailing there at this time of the year. It looks late for me. 2 months....end of October.

Last year I was sailing in Cape Breton the whole month of November. I was almost the last boat out of the St. Peter's Lock before they closed it for the winter (I was out on Thursday, closed it Friday).

You would not want to sail earlier on the south coast of Newfoundland. It is fogbound the whole month of July in the mornings, and sometimes even the afternoons. I do admit that the winds are very strong in October and November and will have to pick a good window for the return.

My home port is Wood Islands PEI. They run the ferry up to a week before Christmas. There is rarely any ice before that.

Saw some of that area by land last month - up the west coast of Newfoundland to Labrador - and would love to visit it by sea. But am not available this fall.

I would think September/October would be nice sailing around Cape Breton and Newfoundland. Just need to watch your weather closely.

Just returned from Nova Scotia, Bras D'Or, south coast of Newfoundland and Saint Pierre. I'm interested in seeing more of it. How can we get directly in touch?

Does your boat have GPS Chartplotter, radar etc? Wouldn't want to run aground in the fog or get run over by an Irving Oil Supertanker. Sounds like a fun trip. Are you planning a lot of diving? I am PADI certified, but quit diving 5 years ago after blowing out an eardrum.

Have gps chartplotter; no radar.

Know that there are significant offsets between the charts and gps when getting in and out of Grey River and Francious, and presumably the adjacent coast line.

It's doable in fine weather, but deffinetly more tricky in fog.

I do hear that September is the best sailing month.

Yeah, that coast is definitely not the sort of place for those accustomed to creating a bunch of 'Routes', and then interfacing their autopilot to follow them...
