Watermaker

Hi:My name is Tex and I am new to this forum.
We taking delivery of our Helia 44 in Spring of 2018.
Does anyone have installed the CruiseROWatermaker on Helia?
Where the unit is located and how was the installation? Do you need dedicated thru hulls?

I appreciate any feedback.

Re: Watermaker

I could have sworn I'd posted this in the Helia Watermaker thread that I started, but apparently not. It appears I have earned some internet shame for the day.

We have a 30GPH CruiseRO watermaker on our Helia and love it. We have it installed in the generator locker, which is where the factory watermakers are located. Rich from CruiseRO has always been extremely helpful and if I remember correctly, he did a video on dedicated through-hulls, so I'd suggest you go on YouTube and look that up.

It might help to contact the manufacturer directly. Congratulations on the new boat.

Re: Watermaker

We put them under a bed. The install on Starry Horizons looks wonderful but the salt water/air in that compartment scares me a little. We have done them under the forward part of a forward bed. with the pump under the floor. I have also installed a large 240 volt system in the starboard bow locker on an owners version.

Re: Watermaker

Starry Horizon and captainjay thank you very much for replay.
I was watching the YouTube from Rich Boren and the Y fitting concept is interesting.
Does your Helia have dedicated thru hull or a Y valve?
I will probably do watermaker installation in US and try to find how to utilize Y valve than see how it works. If needed new thru hull can be installed at next haul out. Any opinion on this concept?
Thank You

Re: Watermaker

Just convert your owners head to fresh water. It will smell better and require less maintenance. Use the current through hull for the water maker. We convert all of our heads on the charter boats to fresh water when the boat is equipped wit a water maker. We usually set on up to be switchable back to salt in case the water maker goes down.

Re: Watermaker

This is an excellent idea. I was thinking about changing to fresh water flush, but this make even more sense.
Thank You

That is one of the big advantages to a high output water maker....a better smelling head...

Plenty of folks do....BUT....there are caveats.

Unless you are going to have LiFePO4 batteries I think it is unrealistic to think of running the 1100W 1.0Hp motor exclusively off your batter banks. The load will be about 90Amps 12v DC and that can crush even a 1000AH lead acid battery bank.

So what many of our clients do is run the water maker through a 2000W inverter ONLY when they are motoring and have their alternator producing power. So this gives you a back-up way to make water if your generator ever goes down OR when you are motoring with the alternator running.

Cheers

Generally it's the high pressure components to process the sea water at 800psi. The low pressure components are pretty cheap.
