Linux Version gpsd Selection for GPS Port

I am running ubuntu 11.04
I am having some issue with the gps and opencpn
sometimes opencpn works with port /dev/ttyUSB0
sometimes not. the last time out at boat, opencpn was not seeing any gps data yet other programs were using the gpsd daemon just fine.

I can never get opencpn to work on libgps or network gpsd, I have only ever seen it work when setting the port to /dev/ttyUSB0

what can I do to make it work using the gpsd daemon instead of the port ttyUSB0? I know about how to select those options under the gps field.
select them and select show console output yields a blank white window with no gps data showing.

Don't use NMEA Data Source = /dev/ttyUSB0 , when gpsd is running.
Only use ->Network LIBGPS.

The NMEA data stream window is blank when gpsd is running. The output from gpsd is not NMEA.

Re: Linux Version gpsd Selection for GPS Port

thanks for that, how can you tell opencpn is getting gps data if you cant use the nmea window when using libgps?
here is a screenshot with boat in bright red.
so is boat red and green icon in right hand corner enough to tell?

also I can get dev/ttyUSB0 to show data on opencpn when gpsd is running, is that bad?
first pic is using libgps, second with it set to dev/ttyUSB0

Yes, green signal 'strength' bars in top right corner indicate GPS signal.
IIRC the 'strength' in this case is related to number of satellites in view.

Either gpsd is not locking the file descriptor or OpenCPN IO routines ignore the lock. Both cases not optimal.
