varnish tips in the wet?

i have taken down all my iroko trim and now want to varnish.

cornwall is quite damp at this time of year,any tips on using international yacht varnish(solvent white spirit) on previously un painted wood in a wet climate?

also any tips on using wood stain appreciated.

don't. If there is condensate on anything around you, there is no way any varnish is going to cut through it. Wait.

been mixing down with 50% white spirit,so far 2 coats,last week has been dry and cool next week is warm and wet.

converted the green house into a varnish shop but humidity is a problem....so far so good......but

at least all the plants i put outside the greenhouse to make space are benifiting from the warm wet weather!!!!!!

Varnish inside a dry warm hangar / garage.

If the wood looks OK, why use stains?

If the wood does not look OK, why not make it look OK?

i need to stain all the new plywood panelling replacing the old white board that has rotted out.

wondering wether to stain the ply first,or add the stain to the varnish?

IMHO use wood stain first, then apply varnish on top.

I normally apply several layers of varnish so with colored varnish I could not control the outcome.

+1 for that. WYSIWYG if you stain it first.

thanks for the input,guess i will start with a lighter stain first direct on the wood then if nessacary darken it down to match the older stuff .
might be an idea to do a few test sections to try keep colours uniform thruout the boat.

will do,currently knee deep in in the old panelling that will be used as templates for the new stuff,just got to get the production line moving.....and the staff motivated(wife ,son and daughter!)

Any way to put a small (non petro) heater in there to knock down the humidity? Also, try a good dark or light filler, rubbed in across the grain, before staining to fill any pores in the wood.

have got a small 100w green house heater in the green house/consevatory/varnish room and infa-red heat lamps in the shed which have worked well over the winter whilst laminating the gel coated ceiling panels.
