Will garmin NMEA2000 GPS work with other brand plotters?

The thing which still has me stumped is how I can connect the NMEA2000 GPS devices I want to this thing if the socket is 0813! I am sure all raymarine will tell me is to buy their overpriced and not very good GPS units.

The manual says the C120 is compatible with NMEA2000 but that is the last mention of it!

OK just spoke to raymarine. They told me I need a 130 GPS PLUS some conversion kit for the signal which costs... wait for it... $475!!!

I asked how can I connect another N2K gps to it and they said its not possible as no N2K GPS will work with it. So N2K compatible? Well not really.

However he did say that cable should still be available for $44 and I can connect a 0183 GPS that way. So looks like I must use a 0183 GPS.

Any tips on buying a 0183 GPS? Evermore is the go right? Still $200 though.

Yes use that Garmin and the 0183 cable. Wire them together and away you go

You cannot connect nmea2k to a socket marked 0183.


Seatalk 2 was Raymarine early foray into can bus. The system is technically NMEA 2k compliant, but ray never got it certified it also contains some proprietary extensions.

Seatalkng is Raymarines certified nmea2k system albeit with non standard connectors.

ray have claimed that NMEA 2K devices should not be connected to seatalk 2 directly. Some people have done it and some have worked and others not.

Try the Garmin GPS19X Hvs that will definitely work, its NMEA 0183 and can transmit on 4800 and 38400 baud.

I found some data on it. It is 0183 and had wiring diagram on how to connect to a 0183 device, but it wants a low voltage supply, not 12V. Sounds pretty easy to achieve.

My socket is NOT marked 0183, that was the prob. But now we know its 0183, but not thanks to the manual!

Possibly some N2K works when you hook it upto the seatalk 2. But the rep said specifcally not GPSs as there was no such thing as a N2K GPS when the C120 was made.

Here is the manual for the $69 GPS. Looks to do 0183 fine. Just need to supply it with 3.3-6V DC. Should be easy with a 2W zener diode. For some reason you can get the 12V model for twice the price.

The disappointing thing is that its only 12 channels. My $20 USB GPS had 50. Having more than 12 channels going to make any real difference?

Easiest power option - an off the shelf cell phone charger for cars. Most go from a 12 cig lighter type plug to somewhere in the neighbourhood of 3 to 5vDC already, and they're quite efficient. From one of my surplus haunt's, I bought several such Kyocera chargers with really nice switching DC-DC converters for like $1 each. Cheaper than building.

If you are building, hit just about any electronics store and get a 7805 (or the smaller 78L05) linear reg IC. The IC plus two small capacitors and you're done. Better and easier than a zener plus a resistor.

Awesome tip on the charger! Also, after some digging around on the new boat I found the raymarine NMEA 0183 cable!!!!!

I would dump that old & tired plotter and everything with a Seatalk or Seatalk2 connector. Much better for your heart too; that stuff belongs in a museum.

The C120 is a good plotter, reliable long lived and with a lot of functionality. I see no reason why the OP should dump it

It's been selling for a decade, early 2000's design. It's time has come: for a spot in the chart plotter museum. Not having N2K is the last drop: get rid of it, don't put any more money into this tired tech.

Jedi is typical wealthy consumer type of person. He has the money and feels the need to replace everything with the best due to perceived obsolescence, and suggests everyone else does the same.

Since my whole system appears to work fine, and I can probably get it all going again for $100. I will not follow the suggesting to throw all that perfectly functional gear away to become waste. Im not into spending $5000+ to replace something that works just because I watch too many advertisements.
