VHF Mounting

Why is it that I have never seen a VHF radio mounted at the helm of a sailboat. Is it a security issue or is there some other reason?

Re: VHF mounting

You don't want them to get to close to the steering compass as their speakers have magnets in them. Also, some aren't fully waterproof.

Otherwise, no reason they can't be located near the helm or elsewhere in the cockpit.

Also, since distance is more or less line of sight, the higher the better.

Re: VHF mounting

I had a uniden with a Ram remote and had the remote at the helm and the radio inside which was a nice setup.

Err... it's the height of the antenna that is important, not the height of the radio!

Doh! That's what I get for not reading more carefully before responding. I had been reading about SSB antennas just before and for some reason inserted "antenna" into the question.

Is there a delete so I can withdraw my silly response?

Look closely, you'll see them all the time in close proximity. RAM mics are a favorite. But they are all a small distance from the helm to avoid interrupting the compass.
