"How are the guys who race around the world getting weather and email?"
I think the song goes "Money makes the world go 'round.."

Anyone can buy comms these days, the only question is how much performance you need and whether you're willing to pay for it. In the big races I would guess $pon$or$hip is also involved for publicity.

Yotphix-
You can use a 5-watt handheld VHF radio to chat with the astronauts on the ISS too. VHF isn't the only way to go, and the speed is much less than microwave, but using VHF also means no cranky antenna alignments to deal with. A very good thing for a small boat in the ocean.<G>

I am on my 4th year with Skymate with good results. There virtual bouy type weather forecast is the most reliable (accuarate) source I have.

It can be a little pricey if you don't watch your characters.
