Question for people with Garmin + Ais

I have a question for someone who actually has it installed because I can't get a straight answer from Garmin.

On the Garmin chart-plotters, when you choose an AIS target, it gives you the option to call the ship using VHF.

Does that work with any brand of radio or Only Garmin? And then next question is that if that call can be accomplished over NEMA 0183 or not, and if so, is that outbound NEMA sentence a part of the DSC spec so that ANY DSC radio should be able to do it?

Ok, so that's more than one question... sorry
