Linux Driver

I am looking for a Linux USB driver to my GPS Globalsat model MR-350. It works perfectly with Windows so I would like to use it on my Linux openSUSE run computer.
Can anyone help me?

drivers for BU-353 (or any other devices based on PL-2303 chipset) should be included in the kernel in most modern Linux distributions. I.e. - if your distro is within the last few years, it should "just work". The device would appear as a serial device such as /dev/ttyUSB0 (but naming may vary)

brak, thanks. I have SUSE 11.3 and I can see ttyUSB0 where 2303 serial converter should be shown. If I use dmesg command this converter is listed in ttyUSB4-1. What am I doing wrong? /dev/ttyUSB0 file is empty.

Each time you plug out and in the device, it may change to a new USB tty. It seems that now is using ttyUSB4. BTW, all tty device files seem empty.

A good way to check for data is to load gpsd and look, using xgps, at the traffic in the port. The documentation of OpenCPN has some good examples of use.

question I run Ubuntu 11.04
I do the command
dpkg-reconfigure gpsd and it uses the port /dev/ttyUSB0

I run xgps and see the map

what happens if the port changes? Does gpsd monitor port changes and still work?

device autodetection I recall xgps did not work until I ran and set the port.
I might try reconfigure and leave it blank and see what happens again.

I run XGPS and it gives me an error. It is looking for gps.client file to import and no such file exists.
I checked the GPS. It works and the computer receives data but there is no connection to my OpenCPN.

opencpn i setup to use port /dev/ttyUSB0 or gpsd

opencpn can also use gpsd, but if xgps cant use gpsd the neither can opencpn.

I did have some trouble at first figuring out gpsd config. I ended up doing a purge (complete removal with configuration of gpsd and reinstall gpsd) then after doing the reconfigure command it worked.

also if you run dmesg after plugging in your gps device, dmesg will report the port assigned and other info. gpsd supports a lot of devices.
support for gps devices is programmed into the linux kernel

it sounds like gpsd is not working on your system. I am using ubuntu 11.04

what version of gpsd are you running?

MR-350P mouse SiRF-3 RS232,PPS 2.90 3.01 May work inside wood frame buildings. PPS pulse is only 1uS wide, but newer gpsd handles that fine. Be careful, there is also an MR-350 (no suffix P) that does NOT have PPS. Reported by Gary E. Miller <gem@rellim.com>.
