Electronic MOB Devices

I had a Raymarine Lifetag system
Raymarine Marine Electronics - LifeTag

I like the Lifetag as it does not require manual activation and it integrated with my previous chart plotter to leave a WP at the MOB position. It is also very small and fits easily in a pocket.

Following a lightning strike it's been necessary to replace all my electronics. I decided on a NMEA 2000 backbone with all Garmin excpet a Simrad AP and B&G wind and displays.

As Garmin do not have a similar product i'm not sure which way to go. Does anyone know if I can interface the Seatalk data either onto the backbone or perhaps directly to the GPSMAP 5208.

I've looked at the personal AIS beacons but mostly they're not automatically activated (unless attached to a life jacket) and seem rather large. Also the VHF DSC units but they won't give any indication of position. Can anyone offer a solution?

It works with newer Garmin systems but you need to buy a Seatalk-NMEA2000 (Seatalk NG) converter.

It says it must have a separate power source but I didn't need that.
It also says that it only supports a few devices but it worked with all my old Seatalk instruments (wind, depth Lifetag, auto pilot, speed etc). All vcnnected at the same time to one converter.

Good link, thanks. This will convert ST1 to STng.

I'm guessing that then I will need a STng to NMEA2k connector. Do you know if I can drop this straight into the backbone?

If so I have 2 chartplotters on the network. Will they both display a MOB waypoint if a Lifetag device goes out of range?

Glad this is the only Seatalk device i'm trying to keep.

Thank you. I actually ordered two R10's today.

I'm still trying to integrate the Lifetag. We don't always walk around with our lifejackets on and the Lifetag being small and light is easy to throw in a pocket.

I don't beleive the life tag will work via conveyor to Garmin. I was under the impression lifetag used a custom seatalk command not handled by the converter. I stand to be corrected on this.
