Chart plotter / radar

I have a used E80 and E120 Raymarine and Radar. I would like to bench test them without installing on boat. Can this be done and if so how. I guess the Radar dome would have to be out side .

I think I have all the cables.

Re: Chart plotter / radar

Put the dome on top of your car, run the cable into the back seat.

Place the display on the back seat and attach the power to a cigarette lighter adapter.

Turn on the radar and have a look see....if you’re really out for thrills put a tarp over the windows and try to drive down the road[emoji851]

Re: Chart plotter / radar

I have a portable jumpstart battery device which I always use to test any instruments. Being portable and 12v I can do the testing anywhere.

Re: Chart plotter / radar

I might be wrong (and I expect someone will correct me!) but I'd be careful to put the radar dome above body height when testing.

With the new breed of radar they say not? With the older ones higher than that.

Just take a look in the manual. They all list the safe distance. It’s typically less than a foot or two unless it’s a much older or larger radar, then it might me a meter or two.

The older ones would be like sticking your head in a microwave. I wouldn't want one just above head level.

Have you ever seen an older radar mounted at head level? Maybe so?
