After buying a sailboat larger than we ever planned to own -

And after clearing out, selling, and renting our house in New York -

And after driving 3000 miles across the country to a place we don't know, on
an ocean we don't know and surrounded by people we don't know -

And after taking possession of an old boat that was neglected for years -

And after moving aboard and taking her apart one square inch at a time (or
so it seems) and rebuilding her as best we could -

We are finally taking off.

Although this is more my dream than his, but not by much, I find myself imagining all the things that could go wrong, places where budget dictated a compromise on a fix, stories of vicious currents, eddies, pinnacle rocks and floating logs float through my waking thoughts.

Where did the dreams of bears catching salmon at the shore below a glacier go? Does everyone go through this?? I hope to hear some yes's or I'm in big trouble.... and of course there's weather coming tomorrow. Nervous.

How could you not invest 100% of yourself (on a number of levels) and not have some anxiety about the next step?



Just like you did with the refit break the next steps (sailing off) into manageable sections and have confidence you'll adapt to all the new things you'll experience, just like all the new things you adapted to to get you to this point.

We are finally taking off.

woohoo!! ... a little over a year ago I poked my nose out into the Strait of Georgia for the first time ... heading north into the great unknown ...

If I remember you're planning on heading the same way ... you're gonna love it.

I find myself imagining all the things that could go wrong,

check ... it keeps you vigilant, and when something does go wrong you'll already have a plan for it.

a compromise on a fix

every boat has 'em ... as long as you know what they are.

stories of vicious currents, eddies, pinnacle rocks and floating logs

pay attention to the tide tables and you'll never see those viscious currents unless you want to ... the rocks are well charted ... the logs ... yeah you gotta keep watch, but very few of them are actually dangerous.

bears do their dreaming in the winter ... at the moment they're too busy catching salmon at the shore below a glacier.

Does everyone go through this??

Don't worry about the logs too much. You will be going slow and the boat hull is thicker down there.
I knew one guy who told me he imagined he had at most 10 ft of water below. Because he was afraid of deep water��. If you worry excessively can you enjoy ? If not maybe an RV ? The best to you !
