seized windlass

Hi everyone,
Robert here, i am new to the site so i will get right too it.
My Nilsson Windllass has a seized clutch brake and am wondering if it could have a left hand thead to release the clutch. That would mean pull back to the stern to release.
I have removed the grease fittings and three bar bronze handle, lock nut and been WDing it for 2 weeks.
I have two 5 ft bars on it and been hammering too.
It is the H4000E, a hydraulic monster.
The bronze bars a bending.
Anyone, out there maybe?

Re: seized windlass

Don't have your model, but all the windlass's I have very used had standard threads. Righty tightly, lefty Lucy. If you want to make sure, contact the manufacturer. Also try toilet bowl cleaner on the bronze (tidy bowl). Don't get any on any aluminum. It's a strong acid. I use it to clean my bronze.

Good luck

No Google result for Nilsson H4000E but -

No picture on the website matching your description but I'd guess these might be the people to ask. Maybe built only to special order at that size?

Wouldn't risk damaging a windlass as expensive as yours sounds. LH thread is certainly a possibility. Usually used when normal operation would tend to unscrew RH thread, ie wheel nuts on left hand side road wheels of large commercial vehicles - in the UK at least.

Re: seized windlass

Found this on the website, H3000 horizontal windlass.

http://www.jamesnilsson.com/site/jam...lssonh3000.pdf

Didn't see a key to the drawing but:

item 40 is a keyway
item 41 appears to be a pin which will need to be punched out, then the clutch/gipsy can be withdrawn with a straight pull.

There was a reference to removing a pin somewhere else so fairly sure that pin will be your problem.

Hope it helps

ps. 14 & 15, gipsy and outer clutch cone should come off with a straight pull. Gear puller might be needed if they're siezed solid.
Good luck!
