Yes... sort of.... goose neck OK but has parted company with boom... you would have to work your way back through her blog to, I think, pre Cape Horn.

Fitting simply blind riveted to mast ' as built '.

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

i'm wondering if her wind vane is operative.....or she was unable to fix it.

The boom deal sounds not optimal, one can see why she's been so conservative about using the main. it would be a monstrous pita to lose the boom. I guess she didn't carry any taps and dies.... I wonder if she has a hand drill?

So much we don't understand.

Thanks, El P, for finding what happened to the boom for us all.

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

May have just been kicker attachment..
https://svnereida.com/blog/4930-day-...my-u-s-friends
but has led to gooseneck re-enforcement as it also relies on blind rivets...
https://svnereida.com/blog/4934-day-...on-to-the-mast

I have the same fittings .. see below... but mine - as built - is bolts into threaded mast section...

So this is how they build yachts in Sweden... the land that gave us IKEA.....

I don't think she has lower -paddle- section of her hydrovane any more......

Well as all of us here, I wish her godspeed.
Looking at her repairs though ... I just hope they hold out for the next 6500 nm

boom and especially vang fittings have a hard life in sustained offshore use. Every wave is a fatigue cycle. Construction which is perfectly fine for 'serious' coastal or even 'light' ocean crossings, will start to weld crack and fastener fail when exposed to really sustained offshore use.

I have gone thru multiple rebuild and redesign cycles each of multiple boats to get solutions which stand up, and the final product is always a bit like the final anchor - about 2-3x beefier than the 'standard'. Even the Royal Huisman , which had a (Rondal mast) welded 15mm aluminum plate structure needed extra gussets welded in.

Looks like lots of northerly winds in Jeanne's forecast - I guess that's just winter weather. No easterlies yet though, which is fortunate.

Anyone every anchored in the Chatham Islands?

I've sailed by a couple of times but never stopped.

Did not really think they had a decent yacht anchorage, but just looking at the charts - this one does not seem so bad.

Closer in towards the 'Fish Wharfs' would seem optimum, unless the stench drove one elsewhere.

It’s not somewhere you want to ride out a storm. Fine in average weather but you’re better off out if it gets nasty.

I rather suspect she's sussed that, and moved on.

Sussed what? The energy source for the A/P? The tired and incompletely repaired mainsail? What?

Both those inlets are very open to the southern ocean swell. Would be pretty rolly, even in strong NW, so possibly unsuitable for completing repairs, and would be the wind to head out easterly on.. Her blog says she's decided to leave them (The Chathams) to starboard, and my sense of it is that she really just wants to get on with it, and return to Victoria, Canada.

Re: Jeanne Socrates' "Nereida" Damaged in Record Attempt

Chathams? Not much there of use to her ... limited mainsail... no engine.... and I read yesterday that she had actually landed her main anchor and rode before leaving Canada.

However - the anchorages in the Chathams aren't too bad .... and in settled conditions the swell goes away....

First and last pics....... the 'capital' .. Whitianga... good shelter behind the point either alongside or at anchor... the town boasts a shop, a bank, a hire car, and a pub....
Port Hutt... with the wreck... also well sheltered from SW.
Kaingaroa on the north coast is exposed ...surprise surprise ... to the north.
