Re: Moving 42' Sailboat from Florida to Seattle

I've always wanted to do the Loop.... Sail up the east coast into the Erie or St Larry Seaway, Great Lakes, THEN truck it to PNW

Whatever you do, don't listen to anyone who suggests sailing it to the west coast of Texas! Sorry!

That's the way I'd do it. If I couldn't sail it home myself.

Cheers

I would like to know what decision the owner ever made. If he would be so kind to let us know.

Call Joule Transport they're not the cheapest but they make it painless with reasonable pricing and decades of experience. Just moved coast to coast and cost $12K plus hauls etc at each end. They made the trip in less than 10 days with only over width (14') to take into account. (They took care of all pilot cars) Make sure you strip anything that would make it over height and over length as this will save you money!

Re: Moving 42' Sailboat from Florida to Seattle

Sorry for not responding earlier and thanks for all the replies. For those suggesting I sell and buy on the West Coast and those asking where the boat is moored I have not yet purchased a boat. I have my heart set on a Tayana 42 CC and they are far more common and less expensive on the East Coast. The reason for the post was to get a feel for the added cost and hassle involved in bringing her back home should I find one on the right coast (as opposed to the left coast). From your responses I can say having it sailed is not something I no longer consider unless it was with me and for pleasure. You guys are right it would be too much wear and tear on her.

CaptainKJ I like the idea of sailing her to Houston and trucking from there. Not sure why rgscpat was so against it??? I don't much care for your offer to sail her around the Horn for me and save the canal fees, but thanks anyways.

callistov42 I am trying to get a hold of Dockwise to see if Vancouver is still one of their destinations but they have not responded to my email yet.

Thanks to those who welcomed me aboard this forum. It is certainly a wealth of good information from friendly mates.

PS. If anyone finds a lonely and unloved Tayana 42 CC in the marina let me know.

Hey, that was a joke -- but people probably didn't read CAREFULLY what I said, which was:

"Whatever you do, don't listen to anyone who suggests sailing it to the west coast of Texas! Sorry!"

Hint: w-e-s-t as in El Paso, Lajitas, Terlingua, Pecos, Marfa, Alpine...
I once was on raft named "Goober" paddling down the Rio Grande during spring break ... against a headwind. Not terribly navigable. Though I think there was seacoast there about a 100 million years ago.

In reality, and seriously, trucking the boat from the Houston area (Clear Lake, Seabrook, Kemah etc.) is a very good and sensible idea.

I will now go punish myself for a failed, too-subtle attempt at humor. Again, sorry!

One particular advantage of sailing across the Gulf (or around the Caribbean) is that you get a great shakedown voyage, then chances to fix things both in Houston and the PNW.

If you decide to come to Texas to haul, let us know. There are several board members in the Kemah/Seabrook area and we can help you with a yard (Seabrook Shipyard), riggers to help with the mast, accommodations and good restaurants while you are in the area. You could probably even get a ride to the airport if you needed one.

That is one of the nice things about CF. People you have never meet willing to help you out. I have stayed aboard people boat that I have never meet before, stayed in there houses, gotten rides and lots of help. Thanks for all the above people

Wow! That's amazing. Are there friendlier people than cruisers? Now I just need to find the right boat.

Re: Moving 42' Sailboat from Florida to Seattle

When I went to abaco for 6 months in my sailboat, sailing alone, I found the best way to meet people was to take the kayak out at 4pm, bring rum, knock on a hull and ask if they wanted a drink. Always got invited for dinner and made some friends that way. Still keep in touch with some of them now after 10 years. Most of the cruisers are friendly people. Try doing that on land.
