Cost of Insurance Survey (Miami)...

I was recently informed by my insurance company (USAA) to get an insurance survey, as it has been 10 years.... I am in south Florida (Miami), and wonder if anyone has been surveyed recently.
I have a Benetau 350
Can this be done in the water? Cost per foot? or other cost?

Ask a local surveyor or three for a quote on a Condition and Value Survey (C&V, or CAV) .
Find them at SAMS or NAMS.

Good place to find a surveyor for a C&V survey is the Boat US Insurance list at BoatUS: Marine Insurance - Marine Surveyors . I just paid $10/foot for an in-the-water survey on a 40' sail.

We just had this done in Anacortes, WA. In the water, cost was $200 for a 40' sailboat.

The going rate here in SoFlo is $20/ft assuming the boat's reasonably new (less than 20 years old). And don't forget the cost of the haul. That could be the biggest variable.

You need to check with your insurance company and ask them if they will accept an in the water survey. I recommend Roy Short at A1+ Marine Surveyors in Ft. Lauderdale. He has surveyed my boats for the last 18 years and has always been professional, thorough, honest and competitively priced. You won't have any problem getting him down to Miami. You will find his firm listed in the BoatUS list of recommended surveyors.

We had an insurance survey done on our 24 YO boat during our last routine haul-out in Bradenton, Fla in January 2009 at a cost of $12.00 per foot. Unfortunately, the Surveyor took it upon himself to make a number of "suggestions" for measures and "improvements" that were above and beyond ABYC requirements because he "thought they were a good idea" that our ensurer subsequently made a requirement for continuing our insurance coverage (e.g. "weighing" our 5, 14 month old Kidda ABC dry chemical fire extinguishers which, of course, our Fire Extinguisher service company though was very amusing--they either have pressure or they don't!). In view of the foregoing experience, I suggest you caution your surveyor to confine him/her self to condition, value and no more than ABYC requirements.
