Free audiobooks / Librivox

I was never much of an audiobook person. . . . But then I got this Android phone and discovered Librivox.org, where they have hundreds of free public domain audiobooks for download. And I've kinda gotten hooked.

I'll listen to a book many times when it's not convenient to be reading one -- while cooking or doing maintenance or while drifting off to sleep. I also like to plug the phone into a home stereo's line-in, or a car stereo. It's incredible what you can carry around in your pocket now.

So, just to list what I have so far from Librivox, in the nautical vein. If anyone else has recommendations, feel free to add to the list.

Captains Courageous (really good reader -- he does about ten difference voices)
Heart of Darkness
Riddle of the Sands
Moby Dick
Treasure Island
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Sailing Alone Around the World

P.S. For other Android owners, the app I use is "Smart AudioBook Player." It's free, and very functional.

Re: Free audiobooks / Librivox

Audiobooks are great for those that sometimes get a little queasy having their nose in a book on passages.

But can you say you've read a book when you've only listened to it??

Thanks for the post Cormorant. We are an Android family (four devices and counting ) so we appreciate the tips!

I am using an iPad and can't find a "librivox selections app". Wen I try to download the files from Librivox, I just just a "Safari can't download this file" message.
Can anyone help?

LibriVox » about listening to LibriVox
I get the same "Safari cannot open this page because the address is invalid" message

I can listen to books on my Kindle, but the automated voice is expressionless. Would be nice to have another option.

Feeling frustratingly dense at the moment. Ali I get is the Safari message that I am unable to download. I have the itunes app installed. Is there anything else I am missing?

A friend who is blind has read hundreds of books just that way.

I'm sorry Lass, I have never used an IPad or Kindle. I think they may require special files. Hopefully someone else here has one and can answer your questions.
