i'm looking for a digital moisture meter that has probs to check the affected area in question.
Any suggestions as to a brand that is reliable ?

Better yet use the infrared camera for attachment to the iPhone! More accurate and has more uses.

I built my own using DHT11 temperature/humidity sensors connected to Arduino. I get readings through very basic webpage using any device with web browser. All components sourced from ebay to make it $-sensible.

There are two basic types of moisture meters - pinned and pinless. With the pinned type, you have to stick the pins into the material (like wood) you want to measure the moisture in. It actually measures resistance and gives a estimate of the moisture content. The pinless types send a radio signal into the material it is layed on and the change in the signal is a measure of the mositure. In general the pinless type is used to measure the moisture in boat deck and hull cores as you don't want to drill a lot of holes in the fiberglass skin to get to the balsa core. The two mentioned above by EricFinn are pinless and commonly used by surveyors for deck moisture inspections.

Note that interpreting the readings from a moisture meter takes some experience. Many other things (like metal) can cause a high reading. Do some research.

I could be tempted to buy a pinless unit. Seen a guy using one. Over the antifouling paint and everything.

What are you planning on measuring? Deck core? Again if so, a pin type is NOT what you want. And you can't get useful readings through antifouling paint as the copper will mess the reading up.

The guy was measuring a hull, in the boatyard. Can't say what the antifouling was. But it was still on the hull. Maybe a non-copper paint.

How does a copper based antifouling paint disturb the non-pin meter?

What happens to the reading then. Is it too high or too low?

I am not buying one.

I have seen jobs done with a thermal camera but I cannot use one. Maybe in a future incarnation.
