I've had wind generators make so much noise in an anchorage in Georgetown, I finally couldn't take it any longer, buttoned up, and cut on my diesel generator and A/C.

Re: Safety Issues running generator at night?

I am very sensitive about running our genset in any anchorage where we're not alone even though you can't tell if our genset is running unless you notice the discharge water coming out of the through-hull.

In Avalon Harbor on Southern California's Catalina Island, it is actually against the law to run your genset between the hours of 2200 and 0800. Even though there is a large population of sportfishers, trawlers and luxury motor yachts there, the law is obeyed. The nights are quiet there except for the noisy partiers on shore but they usually quiet down around 0400 or 0500!

I know there are a lot of boats out there that use the small Honda generators and I find them terribly annoying. That noise seems to have the ability to travel clear across even the largest anchorage.

Fair winds and calm seas.
