There's that widely seen video of a woman and her son going out onto a breakwater in Hawaii, after being told how dangerous it was. I love the shot of her and her son being washed off the rocks and into the sea, only because I know it ended well, and their only injuries were some painful coral or barnacle abrasions. Did that hurt? Gonna listen next time?

Having lived on the ocean or very nearby virtually my entire life, as many here have, we take a lot of what we know almost instinctively for granted. A funny story from many years ago:

My first job out of college was at a large resort hotel on the beach in Myrtle Beach, SC. One night a guest, from somewhere in the Midwest IIRC, noticed that the sea level was down. He had no idea whatsoever about tides. He asked one of my fellow managers what happened to the water. Being a bit of a smart ass, the manager said "Well, they let a bit of water out each night so they can clean the beach for tomorrow". The guy thanked him and walked away entirely satisfied with the explanation.

On the one hand very funny, but on the other, the basis for many of the incidents cited here.

Fairly often I get asked by a visitor whether it is possible to walk all the way around the harbour - on the quay...........

We get a few that get taken by the Turnagain arm bore tides. Try a google on that, or youtube has some videos. Wind surfers ect... have lost their respect for the power of that water and it eats a few every year. There are also mud flats there that people walk out on and then get stuck and the tide comes in and gets them.

Found out how the students in the OP died.. seems they were on some Uni ritual The Hour of the Devil' which involved them going to the beach at night.. all but one stood with their backs to the sea.. then they were blindfolded and asked questions.. if they got one wrong they had to step backwards...
The only survivor was the questioner.. who also was the only one to see the wave coming...
The ritual truly did become 'The Hour of the Devil' for 6 of them.. so sad..

It happens everywhere there is water.

I used to live in DC and fish on the Potomac river, close by the District. Every year about 6 or 7 people die in that part of the river, despite a forest of signs warning them that what looks like placid water is not. For example, there is one stretch, under Chain Bridge, where the river narrows to less than 100 feet, but the depth plunges to 80 feet. Jump in there and there's a good chance you won't come up until you're a quarter of a mile down river due to the hydrodynamics of the currents.

Even the most innocent looking stretch of water can be lethal.
