Its the pole that runs from the sand plate up to the hull... the rudder overlaps at the front by about 1/6th of the total width...

This angle better shows the bar connecting the keel to the rudder.



Perhaps the bar should have been extended to the end of rudder.

For your boats configuration that's exactly just right, chances that your prop is damaged is dramatically reduced by that configuration. That's great Mark, thanks!

Better to ram a barge causing the sinking of SUVs and containers rather than ramming a floating container as it's less likely one will receive underwater damage.

The incidents are recorded, often published, and sometimes hundreds of containers are dropped off the deck of a container ship, at a time, in a storm. More than half of these remain afloat! These amount to thousands per year!

I have not hit one, but a friend did. It holed his bow! He managed to blindly cut through a reef in the Bahamas, and beach his boat before it sank.

I have had close calls as well, with full size trees, (with a 20' rootball), and countless boats on autopilot, and no watch.

This is why I chose an unsinkable trimaran. Between the three hulls & sealed wings, collision need not be lethal... (IF the water is warm).

In monohulls, I have seen retrofitted oval "submarine doors", with dogs all around. If well installed at the 2/3rds to the bow point, it could help allieve "that sinking feeling"!

With all the hazards out there in addition to careless whales and mindless containers, no wonder boats never seem to leave their berths, only to await their sinking from the next tsunami or being burned up in a marina fire.

I'm from UK we call them sleepers because they lie still under the rails

Guy's i believe that build is a Loyds of london rule for boats/ships build according to their spec's. A number of cats use the bow area and area aft area as boyancy but can be also be seen as type of cain locker configuration to take impact without sinking.

I was wondering, as i read through the posts, if there is not a way to make sailing a bit safer. I know that we are not on the hard so a garbage truck can come by so we need to look at our vessels. Sure, first and foremost action is avoidance, but this is about that time you wheren't in time!
We owners of plastic boats might have a solution! Kevlar KM2 material that can withstand a bullet on impact. DuPont in the USA manufacture this new generation Kevlar KM2 for the US Army and i am sure the product might serve our reiforcement needs 100%. I will contact DuPont next week and find out if Kevlar KM2 is available commercially unless someone already know the answer to that.

Many of the newer production boats have kevlar-reinforced collision bulkheads. My boat not only has this feature, but a kevlar-reinforced stem and stringers.

This is great news for those that do not have Kevlar reinforced boats. What does your boat specs have say on this point Bas? Especially on the point of impact.
