Where is Garmin's Magenta line for routing?

It's been over a year since I plotted any routes on the Garmin 5212. But now when I make a route, the magenta route line is visible ONLY while in "edit route" mode, then select review and finally choose chart view. I was expecting to see the route course (magenta line) when panning to the appropriate area. What I see are waypoints...but no route! How do I activate a route so it will be displayed while cruising or panned?
