Used Chartplotter Recommendations

I just bought a new (to me) CSY 44 without a chartplotter. On my previous boat I used a Garmin 498 and liked it.

For the next year or so, I will just be doing coastal cruising. Then we hope to retire and go to the Caribbean.

I am learning PC based navigation using Polar View but still would like to have a chartplotter.

$$ of course is an object. I was wondering if I might be happy purchasing "last year's model" instead of the newest and best?

For example, if I stay in the Garmin family, I notice some great deals on used 2006c/2010c models.

The boat I bought currently has:
  • Garmin GPS 126 2000
  • Furuno 24 mile radar
  • Mast Mounted Radome
  • Alpha 3000 Autopilot (1997)
  • Garmin Fishfinder 160 Blue
Any thoughts or suggestions?

I appreciate your help!

Doug

We have a 2006C and it's a great plotter, IF you have the chart data card(s) for your cruising area. You might consider a 3206, which includes built-in US coastal charts.

Dougpad,

Try a Garmin 740s. It has a built in gps antenna and should plug into your radar

Re: Used Chartplotter Recommendations

Thanks for your replies. I'm not locked in to Garmin. The only thing I have left proprietary to Garmin after selling my boat is the Bluechart for Norfolk south on my pc.

Does any manufacturer not require everything to be theirs? I ultimately plan to have at least sonar and AIS to my chartplotter. It would be great to see radar.

The current radar display is about 6' forward of the helm mounted at the companionway. I don't know how I'll see that.

This is all new to me. A chartplotter with sounder is all I've experienced.
