Securing Your Laptop

If your are using your laptop for navigation and have it setup whilst sailing, how do you secure it?

My nav station desk opens upwards, so it feels like I need something that allows my laptop to swing away, or I keep nothing in the desk that I am likely to ever use when at sea and then fix it on top.

A couple of inches of this 3M velcro on each side of the laptop and it stays put:

Once I started using this stuff, I found many uses for it so now I get it in bulk:

Have installed two pad-eyes atop the cabin, under the dodger to which I tie a Panasonic Toughbook laptop with some pcs of 1/8" Amsteel twine. Velcro straps would probably also work well for this.

We've been using a Tree Frog pad to secure the laptop on the chart table. Works great, leaves nothing behind. If the pad gets dirty, just wash it with some warm water and dish soap. Boating - treefrogpad.com No affilation, just a satisfied customer.

3M velcro - the hook-hook one.

Secure the screen too - they are not designed to take zillions of small to-fro movements.

If it were me, I'd get a docking station (if available) and secure the docking station. Then you'll still be able to undock it easily. The advantage would be to have a "charging station and have it be wired to a router should wireless be amiss.

My nav station lid opens upwards from the front as well. What I did was get two lengths of 1" wide webbing and a couple buckles. Loop the webbing around the entire lid and over each side of the laptop, running under the laptop lid. I'd had it in some extremely rugged conditions in some offshore races (lots of heel and big seas) and it's never moved.

I'll probably eventually end up with something from these folks. Amongst other things, they design and build laptop holders for cop cars.

The Tree Frog Pad works best for me. Tech changes too fast for me to sink fasteners or apply adhesive to my nav station. I don't plan on having a laptop aboard much longer. I use buddies (blue or white chewing gum like material)
Stick a nice chunk on each corner of the computer and you can secure your computer anywhere you want
and the good thing is it is not permanent.
It works very good, my company has boats of 120 m long with a beam of 15 m and they roll like hell in bad weather.
