I don't see anything that says it's waterproof.

Also nothing about how bright the screen is. Probably less than 500 nits which would be fine inside a car or boat. Not good outside.

You might want to post this question in the OpenCPN forum to see what the developers think about the possibilities of OpenCPN running on CE. Could be it would, but I wouldn't be surprised it something, (say WXWidgets?) wasn't available, making it impossible at this point.

Cheap, 7" touchscreen. Looks good. But I don't think it'd make an outside chartplotter. If you can find something that will run on it, could possibly be OK for inside at the nav station. At that price I'm tempted to buy one just to play with. If nothing else, I get a large screen GPS for the car...

Could you post a link? I must be finding the wrong thing.

I googled
7" HD GPS 128M AV-IN Bluetooth TOUCH New map 4GB WIN CE

None of them mention screen brightness or waterproof. They all look like the same unit.

The first link was this thread.
I checked 4 of the next 5 (1 was definitely not it)

Re: 7" HD GPS 128M AV-IN Bluetooth TOUCH New Map 4GB WIN CE

Ah, thanks, I finally saw it. That's the place where the seller has typed in features.

If you look at the link in my post right above it, you'll see the same identical item with the same photos, specs (lower down), everything identical. Except in the seller notes, they don't say waterproof. In the specs listed lower down, there is no mention of it being waterproof in either ad. I wouldn't trust the ad that says it is.

So, I'll stand by my original assessment and say it looks great, but not for an outside helm. Of course, leaving the question of what nav software might run on CE.

I'm gonna follow the thread you started in OpenCPN and see what they say. It it sounds like it'll work, I'll probably buy one.

Oh, another option might be, is there a program for CE that will allow you to show the screen from another computer? Probably not, because the only communication would have to be through blue tooth.

I think, only f there is a nautical chart available.

Otherwise, according to Wikipedia:

"Existing Win32 applications: Windows CE cannot use Win32 binaries, libraries, and drivers without modification."

5.0 CE is sort of like XP Embedded.

For a small device I would get something like Garmin Dakota. For a bigger screen probably an Android tablet and hope for Open CPN to run on tablets one day.

For a Windows CE device you may try another Open Source Chart Navigation software called Bluemapia.

Download at Bluemapia » DOWNLOAD Bluemapia for Windows Mobile (Windows Mobile) or bluemapia | Free Science & Engineering software downloads at SourceForge.net
