Re: Preventing Corrosion on Galvanised Anchors (April 1)

Well, there is an actual use for zinc oxide, and that's as a paint additive to prevent mold. When we bought our current boat, it had standing fresh water in the focsile, and turned out to be a real mold farm. The PO had added in ethafoam sheets for insulation in the focsile. And, it was full of mold. We removed, scrubbed, and cloroxed everything. With some advice from a paint manufacturer (Smith & Co), we painted the inside with a zinc-oxide rich epoxy paint (special order). Mold apparently does like to co-exist with zinc oxide. We also got a tub of zinc oxide powder and power-mixed that with latex paint to use on the ethafoam insulation. We had to flame oxidize the ethafoam with a propane torch to get an oxide layer so that the latex paint would adhere to it. We did both sides, and the edges, of the ethafoam sheets (seemed like acres of area). But, we did that 6 years ago and the mold has not come back.
