Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

Look at the Suncor chain hook. It’s big and secure by shape instead of a pin. And easy to attach two lines with a shackle for two line snubberbsetup.

Second the rolling hitch. Anchored 24/7/365 using a rolling hitch on the snubber/chain. Never a problem even with 50k wind from a tropical depression.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

Before chain hooks were invented, mariners used a rope loop lanyard tied in a four-turn Prusik knot. Never slips on chain, never comes unhooked. Cheap!!

Only difference is we now use polyester ropes instead of East Pakistan Hemp.

Agree with the rolling hitch, works well for us on our 38 monohull. We braided about 3 ft.to use to tie the rolling hitch. Suggest you buy a longer rope than you think you need, braiding shortens it.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

I have both the old, and new style Mantus chain hooks. No issues at all with the old style except occasionally it would hang up in the anchor roller. The new style passes through the roller fine, order extra rubber straps though, they do break if they get get i nick. On my second rubber strap. I do anchor 99% of the time.

I am missing what you mean by braiding to tie the rolling hitch.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

Exactly! Thought I was one of the only survivors using this method.
No muss, no fuss, no moving parts, no metal to chafe or corrode, easily replaced when worn. Magic.

+1. We anchor 99% and have the new Mantus on our 44’ mono. Love it.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

I have been using a rolling hitch on all chain rode for years on the bridle for my catamaran and see no reason to change.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

A very useful option for multihulls is a bridle plate. There is, I think, only one of the market, but there are custom designs that are quite handy. I began popularizing this about 10 years ago (specifically the latch) and have seen a lot of variations.

Monstrously strong, locking, fast, and can be used with multiple anchors (that is what the extra hole is for). Ideal for bridles.

It is simple; no moving parts, doesn't fall off when retrieved, and you can't beat the price.
I find rolling hitches harder to remove quickly than the Prussic knot or the Pipe hitch but echo tying.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

From your link to the Mantus Chain Hook:
“Available for 1/4,5/16, 3/8 and 1/2 inch chain”
https://www.mantusmarine.com/mantus-chain-hook/

As Shrew noted:
Their new “M2" hook is also available for 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 inch chain.

Re: Anchor Chain Grip alternatives?

Thank you all for the additional suggestions and correcting my link and obvious lack of proper searching on the Mantus page!
