Tempurpedic Mattress onboard?

We have one at home that we simply love and Im considering taking the sawzall or whatever to it so we can adapt it to use on the boat when we move aboard. Has anyone done this? Were there issues with moisture that are different than the ones associated with regular foam bunk mattresses? I know I am going to have to address the height issue as the tempurpedic is I think 11" tall. I have seen folks at the boat shows selling them custom made for the boat but I would just as soon take the one I already have...Advice and experiences greatly appreciated.

We added the poor man's version... 2" thick Memory foam toppers, on our regular foam mattresses. It made a WORLD of difference in our aches and pains! This layering had an advantage. We put a water proof/quilted cover on the old mattress first. It leeps it dry & mildew free, just like the boat surface under it. Then the "topper" goes on that, covered with a breathable quilted cover. This can be washed easily, doesn't crinkle when you roll over, and the topper can be put out in the sun easily, once or twice a year.

To cut any foam... use a long electric meat carving knife. It's like cutting BUTTA!

I have cut the Tempupedic foam with an electric kitchen knife and it works great- cut slightly larger than your mattress size and perpendicular to flat surface. I did all of our bunks in it and am very happy.

As an added insight, we put a sleep number bed in the master stateroom on our Kanter and LOVE IT!!! I find that during rough passages you can let the air out and you are held in place without rolling around. Our set up does accomodate a queen size mattress perfectly, so this was an easy choice. I bet that the compressability of the Tempurpedic will offer the same stability during passages and make for much improved sleeping.

Wow this is great info. We were really hoping to be able to use the mattress we have. Now I need to do some measurements and see what implications the height of the matress will bring. IIRC the mattress we have is about 11 inches tall will probably require a different lee board set up for the master bunk when at sea.

I had the same intention with teh memory foam mattress, and I designed the bunk on my boat to fit a proper twin sized mattress without requiring any trimming.

We have 3 memory foam mattresses from fleabay. No sense in paying big $$ for the brand. You can order them just about any thickness you want/need. Cuts with an electric kitchen knife.

You DO need to ventilate it if you use it often.

I brought a king size Tempupedic Executive mattress with me to the Bahamas when I brought the boat here for a refit. I had a local mattress company take the old master stateroom angled/tapered foam mattress and duplicate it. They had to make a new cover as the custom Tempurpedic cover could not be cut down and reshaped as the material kept tearing. Total cost $400. It is holding up well, no mold or mildew or adverse reactions to boat life and I sleep a whole lot better. Good luck

I searched for a supplier for memory foam for my sons bed. It is custom made (me ) 5' X 7'. had a really tough time.

Any suggestions?

Whoa Gordo Im not sure my tempurpedic would hold onto me like my leeboards do but maybe? Think I'll see how high I have to lift the bed tonight to roll the Admiral out as a test!
