Re: Spinlock rope clutch

G'Day Geoff,

I think that most chandleries can order them for you. A couple of years ago (well, maybe 5) we ordered a cam from the chandler at Southport. "No worries", said he, but our wx window opened before it arrived so we cleared for New Cal and left without it. To our surprise, the Marine Corail chandlery in Noumea had them in stock, and for only about twice the Aussie price (ouch).

So, anyway, it shouldn't be a biggie... try Whitworths.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Spinlock rope clutch

Hello
We have Spinlock XT clutches on our newly acquired 1998 yacht. They are sticky / even "grainy" through suspected under use.
What is the recommended best way to service them, so they are better "lubricated". (ie) when being 'released' and 'closed'.
Thanks

Depends how bad they are. You can give them a vigorous scrub with soapy water and a brush, moving the clutch handle back and forth repeatedly. If you have a small stiff pipe cleanerish thing to get into the inside and try to get a cloth between the walls of the clutch and the mecahanism. Let them dry. Then Take some Teflon or silicon based lube and spray the living hell out of them. Try to buy a can of lube that has the little straw so you can get into the pivot points. While you are spraying move the clutch handle back and forth.

If that doesn't work then take them off and take them apart. This may actually be the quickest.

As far as replacement parts goes...

They are readily available from many sources online, here is one

Re: Spinlock Rope Clutch

From the Spinlock instructions ➥ https://www.spinlock.co.uk/en/supports/instructions

"... Flush regularly with fresh water and apply a silicone spray or grease
when dry.
Never use mineral oil or solvent based lubricants like "WD40". The wrong lubricants will degrade and weaken the moulded composite components and can cause sudden structural failure. They will also degrade the bearing properties of composite bushes ..."

I would never think disagree with gord however i would advise against any form of grease in this instance as it tends to hold and pull grit and dirt into the mechanism giving it the grainy or sticky feel the poster mentioned.
