Newbie question about Main Sheets and Booms

Hello,
I ended up getting this 16' Johnson Boatworks X-Boat Daysailer this winter, but I have a question. We are just getting into sailing, so I don't know much about, but this boom set up seems strange. It looks like it the main sheet will not allow the boom to swing out passed the back of the boat because of that rope on the aft end.

Am I crazy, or is this how it's supposed to be?

Re: Newbie question about Main Sheets and Booms

You have the fixed travelling across the stern. The sheet is fixed to this but can be let out thus letting the boom go out as far as the length of the sheet allows.

The sheet is attached to the traveller via a purchase (pulley) to make the effort less when pulling it in.

Good luck, you'll have fun!

Re: Newbie question about Main Sheets and Booms

Your main sheet is too short. It needs to be much longer to let the boom out till the point of hitting the shrouds, actually just a little less.

Ok, see that's kinda what I was thinking... Is there a specific type of rope I should be looking for or a supplier someone might recommend?

Polyester double braid, sized to go through the blocks. For the little boat I treated myself to West Marine, for the bigger boat I made a list and ordered it all online from Valley Rope & Supply.
