Need Info on Facnor SD290 Roller Furler

We recently came out of dry layup for the summer in Mexico where our roller furler saw temps in the 100 F range, a hurricane, and mountains of fine blowing dust. I just wiped a fair amount of grease off the bottom of the take up drum and need to know the best way to open up the mechanism to clean and lubricate it. The installation manual says no maintenance is required other than washing out dirt and salt. Even so, the fact that grease has escaped from the bearings makes me want to replace it.

Anyone out there who can help me?

As you indicate, the “SD” is not designed for field maintenance (greasing)*, so you may want to contact Facnor for advice.
Web: FACNOR furling system - Gennaker furlers - Headsail Furlers - Mainsail Furlers
Email: info@facnor.com

Or one of their distributers (they don’t have one in Mexico)
USA: CHARLESTON SPAR
Phone: +1 704.597.1502
Fax: +1 704.597.0961
Email: dlively@charlestonspar.com
Web: Charleston-spar - sailboat Masts - Boom - Rigging - Hardware - Fitting - Vangs - Pole - Charlotte

“SD” Cruising Headsail Furler
Headsail furlers cruising range - Facnor

* There are two large stainless bearings, packed in grease, fitting into the drum to ensure smooth furling . The drum being completely sealed is maintenance free.

Gord,

Thanks for the references. I'll shoot Facnor an e-mail and see what they say.

I found a post from you on "Cruisersforums.com" relating to a Facnor genoa furler's bearings. I have a Facnor SD180 on my Dufour 40, and lost grease just you did. As you say, Facnor say the unit is maintainence free, but I need to service and re pack the drum grease. Did you get any info from Facnor ar anywhere else to help you? I'd be grateful for any advice.

Regreasing Facnor Roller Furler Drums

Mike,

I never did get an e-mail response from anyone so I called the Facnor US maintenance technician at Charleston Spar as suggested by GordMay. He stated that some grease leakage is "normal" and "strongly recommended" I NOT open up the drum as long as it was still working. He went on to say that the only time they recommend opening the drum is a last resort when the furler stops turning.

That advice seems contrary to good engineering practices but I followed it and have had no problems in the six months since my original post.

Good luck with yours,
John
