Do I need running backstay?

I have a 1985 hunter 40 with a B&R rig. The advertisement for the rig claim no need for a running backstay.

It is rigged with an inner stay and it does not look like a running backstay was ever used.

I would like to get a staysail. Do I need a running backstay?

Get one and sail it ..If the mast pumps then yes I would get them regardless of what Hunter says on the matter..If not your choice or call Hunter and ask them what they think.

I think calling Hunter is a good idea--I just replaced a backstay and in so doing really came to understand the forces involved. It doesn't take much to get the mast to bend. I think it would be entirely possible to distort the hull of the boat, especially one that is designed for a B & R rig. I'd be interested to hear what Hunter tells you. . . . Good luck.
