I agree withe the drop cloth option and use it in a few ways. I used my SailRite to sew two together and made three web-strap loops on each edge and one on each corner. I also added a loop in the exact middle/center on both sides of the finished canvas rectangle.

I can drape it over the boom and tie it off to any available point on each side, but I find that if I push the boom to the side opposite the direction the sun is beating down from and tie it off to provide shade over the cockpit it allows better air movement and less feeling of being cooped up.

A tip from the guys in the desert is that if you double up on the layers but separate them by six inches or so you negate the radiant effect of the sun on the underside of the canvas. This allows the air to flow between the layers, cooling the one closest to the deck. BIG difference. Just go from the upper lifelines, over the top of the boom and back under to the same side but to the lower lifeline.

Forward of the mast I can tie the canvas to the forestay and the mast at any height, then use a spinnaker halyard to lift the center, tie the outboard edges.

A conservative treatment with Thompsons Waterseal will make it acceptably water resistant but not too heavy or too much of a fire risk.
