Anyone recognize this furler?

I was going through my storage unit of random boat bits, and tripped over this forgotten furler that was stowed beside the water tank under the V-berth in my boat.

I'm curious what it is, who made it... as other than a punch mark that I'm not familiar with it has no external markings.

I tend to keep stuff like this, because it's pretty looking. Looks like it had a good squeeze put on it, as one of the toggles is twisted up. 5/8 pins! 7 inch outer diameter and weighs 25 lbs.

Thanks,

Zach

Re: Anyone recognize this furler?

I am not sure, but it looks like an early Merriman furler that I had on a boat many years ago. Don Street used to push that brand, and the one I had worked well, but it was free standing (wire luff sail). I wasnt in love with it. ______Grant.

Thanks!

It seems like something that had tried to break in the past, and was probably in good company with the old props and random bits in the locker it shared for god only knows how long.

Re: Anyone recognize this furler?

Zach, looking at your other post about the Merriman winches makes it more likely that the furler is Merriman. I would bet that if you look at a lot of your gear you will find Merriman. They made good gear. Since in the late 70s they were getting out of winches and other gear, they had very good prices on left over things. Being a bargain hunter, I bought a lot of their gear. Was your boat built sometime around the late 70s? Polish that furler, and you have sailboat art. ______Grant.
