Mar-Gas Safety Cylinder system

Anyone know anything about these? Just wondering if it's any good. Stove is not working in our new boat.

I have this system on board and have used it since 2009 and all is well. Recently had it checked with gas contractor here in Australia and he has certified it for use. If you decide to sell the system, please advise by PM to see if we can work something out.

Not familiar with this brand. The control panel says "LP Gas" ... Is this really a propane tank ? if so I find it hard to believe that a propane tank next to a non-ignition protected, domestic type circuit breaker, mounted just above a battery and with hoses secured with gear clamps could be certified by any sane person.

If this really is propane, how do you refill it ?

Can you tell me more about it? Is there a bottle inside? How is it used? Is it something you take and refill? More info please? We just got this boat and don't know what to do with it.

It appears that your system may not be commercially available at this time.
You could probably get more information for Mar-Gas, they are still in business and might be able to direct you to someone who can service your system or at least give you a little more information.

As far as I know they are not in business anymore, unless they changed their name.

Got to ensure you get the tanks inspected and a new label on it so you can get it filled, as the tanks are a bit expensive and not readily available (dont know if you can even get them anymore)

The top 3rd is a cover, which, when the stainless band is removed, you can remove the tank from the boat and have it filled like any other tank. Install the tank, hook up the hose, and put the cover back on

The cover is (or should) be vented overboard, as ours is

Thanks Phantomracer! I appreciate the info. Mine is in the same hold with the electrical disconnect and open to the engine compartment. It is vented. Is this safe?

It looks like the cover over the top of the bottle is intended to substitute for a vented propane locker. So the hoses coming off the top are vents? What's the yellow hose?

If the transparent hose is a vent, I'd replace it right away, as that stuff is prone to kinking which would stop the venting.

Not sure about that. I just found it and seen that this part of the company is still in business, so it would be a good link to ask them about the system. They should know. I googled the name and it showed that and many other company's that have about the same item. If all this isn't, the best thing would be to pm those two other cruisers that have the system.

i think it is a different company that happens to have the same name. The company that made the propane system is Mar Gas Manufaturing. here is an old ad (have to scroll a bit ): yachting magazine

So the obvious weak point seems to be that you have a gas connection on top of the assembly. What happens if it leaks there? The whole point of a vented propane locker is that all the connections are inside, so if there is a leak the gas is harmlessly vented outside the boat.

In this system, it is vented to the breaker just behind the bottle, and to the batteries below.

NB : The hose clamp on the vent hose is the wrong size. The vent hose is not a suitable material.
