Kiwi Prop On Volvo D-30

Hi all

It seems that reverse on the Kiwiprop can be problematic, due to the high pitch, on some engine/geraboxes.

So, specifically, has anybody got any experiences of Kiwiprop on a Volvo D1-30 saildrive?

Who say's that?? and what exactly is the problem? If there is an issue with pitch in reverse, you will have the same issue with forward. And the remedy would be to simply reduce the pitch.

See several other threads on feathering props, here and elswhere. Kiwi prop has fixed (maximum) pitch in reverse.

I can't coment on the Volvo portion, but I bought a kiwi new for my Yanmar and it was pitched perfectly,,,,

I was VERY pleased and noticed a change under sail right away.

I thought that sail drives have same gear ratio in forward as well as reverse thus with the higher fixed pitch in reverse with the Kiwiprop it could overload the engine. It is explained on their site.

I have the Kiwi prop on a perkins 4.108, yes reverse is well over proped and cant get more that 1400 revs but coming into the dock puting it in reverse is like slaming on the hand break. Mine has been intentionaly over pitched in forward giving me hull speed at 2400 revs and works out at 2lts/hr. Max reves 3000 then starts to blow soot. do I like it, hell yes, and next to no drag when sailing. Though it does turn the shaft when sailing over 7.5 / 8 knots.

I have a D2-40 and purchased a SDC prop for our saildrive. It is made by the same folks that make the KiwiProp but designed specifically for saildrives. We have almost 1000 miles on it and have been really happy with it so far, and it certainly isn't overpropped in reverse. You can learn more at sdcprops.co.nz. If you want more information on our experiences I will be happy to elaborate.

What did you have before, 2 or 3 blade fixed or other.
I am contemplating a pair for our cat. I have twin 3 blade fixed now.

Re: Kiwi Prop On Volvo D-30

SeaKing,

The D2-40 on our boat came with a fixed three blade prop.

Hope this helps.
