Fishfinder/comb

I'm looking for a fishfinder/chartplotter in the $400 - $600 range. I see that the Lowrance has 640 x 480 pixels, and the Garmin in the same price range have 320 x 240. Which will be the clearest and easy to read ? Would I loose anything by mounting the transducer inside the boat (epoxied into the fiberglass bottom) of a Gulfstar trawler. Thanks

You will lose some sensitivity to deep ranges by mounting inside. A lot depends on the layup of the GRP. If the builders were generous with the resin and you don't have a cored hull it will work to a deep enough depth for most applications. The best is to test it by submersing the transducer in a water tight plastic bag filled with glycerine. You can place it against the hull and move it around to find the best location and see if it works.
